So, ok, everybody says that the city they live in is SO small. Well, Montreal (POP over 1M) is pretty tight knit. You can easily walk into a store, and the owner knows your mom, or the person who works there was in your math conference last semester. Case in point: yesterday, I had a bus accident AKA the bus driver decided is was quitting time about 50 stops too early and I ended up in the STM (Montreal Public Transportation System) garage. It was a lovely experience. BUT I did spot this adorable little shop in the old Greek village here, and walked in today. It was owned by a friend of a friend's mother? Not only is the entire place STUFFED with quality vintage (even the shower holds some awesome amazing jackets) but the owner serves you tea and cookies, takes your photo, and talks. TALKS AKA INTERACTS. Anywho, the owner was a friend's mom? You don't get that anywhere but in this fine city. I would have taken photos, but you're not allowed to (owner wants to avoid the blogosphere). Good finds - will post later because it's summer in Montreal (big deal after blizzards, especially last week's blizzard. Yes, last week.) and I want to lazy around. But I did pick up the rosary and belt in above photos. And other things!

Hair Rollers

Okay, so, sometimes, I don't have the best hair days:

But, what usually guarantees a good hair day, is a bouffante-type hairstyle.

Prepping for one is fun too - it's like time traveling because you get to use ROLLERS.

So, here are some easy ways of achieving a bit of lift to your everyday hair times.

1) Rollers. (Yes, I JUST mentioned these, but I repeat in case you weren't paying attention. MMKAY?)

These are time-consuming and inconvenient:

These make you look like you are trying to make contact with aliens (therefore, they make you look cray cray, or stoopids.):

And, sometimes, people are just not well versed in beautay-parlour-spake:

Ok, if you don't have velcro rollers, you can always just drink some coke, and use the empty cans as rollers. Ghetto, I know, but I think you're main concern will be the following:

1) your stomach

2) your teeth

3) your blood sugar level

4) not to sound crude and unlady-like: gas.

5) at least my hairs look migthay fine!

2) TEASE LIKE YOU'VE NEVER TEASED BEFORE.

HAIRSPRAY, COMB, AND TEASE!

Go by the country music mantra: The higher the hair, the closer to God.

[Disclaimer: You don't have to be of this religious faith in order to apply this rule. But, you get the point - skyscraper-close-to-sky-bird-may-make-nest-in-hair-high.]

If you're still unsure about this step, here is an instructional video:

3) Some hair pins, some pinning loose ends, and voilà! Volume!

You can also have a toned-down version like this, although I can't remember whether this was after an excruciatingly painful class, or my intention.

Either way, people will me mesmerize the entire world! So that people can spot you 10 km away (or miles, whichever you so choose)! So that people will think,

"Bitch did wha to her hair?"

About 2 years ago, my friend and I began watching Twin Peaks. The first episode appeared, complete with grizzly murder mystery, and then the holy of holiest things happened - Audrey graced the scene with her multiple pairs of shoes for different occasions. I turned to my friend and said, "This is ME. If any pair of shoes could ever bless my presence - it would be a pair of black and white saddle shoes so that I could trance-dance like Audrey."

With this tremendous whirlwind of events, it's difficult to not only fathom the death of one of our most iconic geniuses of the time, but to truly figure where everything collided and went wrong. I think that Lee was someone who went against the grain, and as an artist, the most frustrating thing in the world is meeting so many expectations. Was it the industry? Was it the instability? Who is responsible to care and nurture the artist? Who knows? At the end of the day, it's understandable to many of us how someone could reach that point. At the same time, this was someone (we thought) who looked so far into the future and lived in such a different mesmerizing world that you would believe our modern troubles didn't phase him at all. Hell, we all wonder what went wrong. If anyone could survive this world, we thought - definitely McQueen. Alas, we are simply left with "1969-2010."

Some little shots from my summer vacation:

Palais de Tokyo and Repetto shop (which was closed - SADDIES)

I also had no idea that Paris had such an appreciation for Japanese culture - a pleasant surprise. I love Paris even more (if that is even possible.)

Marrakech - lesson: the orange juice is fresh and great, but don't drink more than a glass a day.

Especially when it is 40 degrees CELSIUS. Hot damn (literally).

Milan is pretty much CLOSED IN AUGUST. So my friend and I pulled a Hemingway (along with our Moleskines) and island hopped. This was on our way to Bellagio (beautiful place). My friend didn't believe that I burned so easily - until she witnessed my red peeling skin on our boat ride home. Ahh the trials of skin so white it burns retinas.

Inside Palais de Tokyo (the reason why I have such high expectations of spaces now: amazing decor, wonderful drinks, ideal reading space, lovely shop, it looks like a giant warehouse. AMAZING)

My midterm season is over. For now. So I am now catching up to sleep and small errands that have recently piled up. Oh well.
Day 1 of recuperation included a silk kimono I picked up a few years ago in Connecticut. Apparently, I should of layered on a thick, thick sweater - it officially snowed today.

A few years back, I went to the Brian Jungen exhibition here in Montreal at the Musée d'art contemporain. We all know how Warhol took mass production to a new level, well Jungen takes it even higher - he'll tear apart luggage, or Nike Air Jordan's and create these beautiful ceremonial masks - all because the red, white, and black in the shoes reminded him of the colors of the Haida indigenous population. His craftsmanship could be especially noticed when he used lawn chairs to create these:

So overwhelmingly beautiful.

Creativity is all about bringing two seemingly separate or opposing elements together - I think it's safe to say that Brian Jungen accomplishes this very well.

Minute Break

I just took a break today to watch Where the Wild Things Are - and I lurved it. I cried like a baby, but it was enjoyable. Speaking of fur and creatures, this was my costume last year - I made a cardboard bib (huge one) and painted it and pasted many feathers on it. My goal was to look like a phoenix of sorts. My sister says I resemble a turkey.

I have to put something together pour demain. Midterm season just picked up - right before my birthday. Lovely. I have already gushed about this quaint little breakfast nook with some of the best eggs I have ever savored in my life. Study wear includes a men's H&M sweater, Urban Outfitters necklace and the tooth necklace location will remain a tiny secret as it pertains to a future post (can we all sing "In the Year 2000?")

Birthday gift, now turned inspiration material: THe Might Book of Boosh. Eat your outfitthemed heart out. Each page has a little rhyme as well - it rhymes with the page number. It took my friend and I A LONG time to figure this out (we were still waking up). An example:

.........and Pop Montreal this year was a bust for some reason? I only went 1 day (Thursday) and wasn't feeling it, despite the fact the I was going to see Butthole Surfers (THEY WERE FINE I JUST WASN'T IN THE MOOD AND THE CROWD WAS NOT FUN STUFF).

So after I awoke from my Sleeping Beauty slumber and realized I missed out on life, I decided to procrastinate more on my studying by going through old pictures? DEE-LITE.

I am behind on so many things this week -

See, it's been more of this

rather than happy faces - but not entirely over stress - I am still trying to wrap my mind around what was New York Fashion Week - and when the Summer decides to peace out and all you have left is the fall (I can't even remember those collections now...triple sigh) it's no wonder seasonal depression exists (be it for clothing or weather moods). But I digress...

I found these babies at the Milan Zara (holy crap - it's about 6 floors huge and wonderful). They fit perfectly and are loose enough to cross my legs whilst pondering Virgilian speech and what nots. I love the slouchy-but-not-really aspect to the jeans and the cuffs are great as well.

Sorry for the low-quality photobooth-ness -- but I've simply been layering necklaces and living in a black men's thick cotton v-neck from H&M - the fit is perfect - it's not too tight around the hips (like most men's clothing) but it's loose enough to be comfortable and layer underneath.

Mainly - men's inspired pieces for the past couple of weeks.

The other thing I came across in the waiting room of my dear, dear friend the dermatologist was an old issue of L'Officiel (September 2008) was an ad for Paule Ka: ummm these gloves were in it - I want them?? YES YES YES.

On a final note - after my crazy-obsessed-and-worshipping-filled post on the Marc Jacob's show - my brain is recuperating and slowly putting these thoughts together:

A) HOW DOES MARC MANAGE TO OUTDO HIMSELF ALL THE TIME?! Seriously, he's like the Meryl Streep of the fashion world. It's incredible.

B) Marc is a great designer - but this collection solidified his reputation as a STYLIST (unless the 2 are usually mutually exclusive - to which I reply - he disproved that) - I mean look at what proportions he put together! He played around with texture and layering (which I love) but he managed to effectively style and combine what would seem as opposing themes together and created new shapes.

I want to know if Tim Blanks interviewed him again (shall we recall the Fall season interview which equated his collection as a series of flushing orgasms? - to which I totally and completely agree! That collection was epic - and he outdid himself AGAIN.) So I would like to know if he did interview him and what he said this time.

Enough about what I think - what were your thoughts on his collection??

School started today and my life as I know it is over. Just kidding - I'm not that melodramatic... ......At least, not until the work actually picks up...

Let me indulge in this photo for a bit - it was a "comfort cupcake the day before school starts." Seriously - this is the packaging for the bakery - it's called a "tulip box" because when you open it up, it blossoms like a flower. Adorable? Beyond.
